The Solutions Are Not Without ChallengesThe challenges to actually achieving significant GHG reductions are daunting in their scope and complexity. But, they are not impossible to overcome. The Electric Power Research Institute1 believes it will take a couple of decades of very aggressive development, demonstration, and deployment of a broad portfolio of technologies to achieve the desired goal of eventually reducing carbon emissions in the electric sector. All of this comes at a price. Substantial new investments are needed to complete the research, design, development, and deployment of new technologies. And, after technology reaches the commercialization phase, continued investment is needed to deploy, operate, and maintain the technologies. 1The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), with major locations in Palo Alto, California; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Knoxville, Tennessee, was established in 1973 as an independent, nonprofit center for public interest energy and environmental research.
